Here are three bits from mainstream news:

According to a survey by the National Institute of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, “Deep Breathing” is now the 2nd most popular alternative medicine treatment used by American adults.

The Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit reports that, “slow belly breathing” reduces hot flashes in menopausal women by 50%.

The Palo Alto Center for Integrative Medicine in Stanford, California and the University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona are now offering seriously ill patients (with cancer and heart disease) access to “breathing-based alternative treatments.”

I am so happy that since we began to shout about all this in the early 70’s, finally, more and more mainstream medical institutions are coming around to the obvious! Yippee! Yahoo! Hurray!

And now, this month, I’d like to share with you some of my notes from a book called “The Power of Prana” by Stephen Co, of the World Pranic Healing Organization. The information in his book is worth digesting, and his exercises are well worth exploring. He is a clear teacher of some of the most important things that we focus on in our study and practice of breathwork.

He reminds us that stress reactions and negative emotions live in our body not in our head (even though they may originate there). All emotions are themselves energy (e-motions = energy in motion). These emotions are held in our “energy body” or “aura,” which overlaps, surrounds, interpenetrates and encompasses our mind and body.

The physical body becomes the place of expression of these energies. It’s where all that stuff gets caught, held, carried, and stored. Whatever is in your energy body is also automatically, simultaneously in your physical body. There is always a thought and a physical feeling associated with an emotion. And every negative or limiting belief in the mind, when activated, produces physical tension or an energetic contraction somewhere in the body.

Master Co identifies three types of negative energies:

1. Negative emotions (the main ones being fear and anger)
2. Limiting beliefs
3. Traumatic memories (conscious or unconscious)

Breathwork, because it awakens kundalini and produces powerful psycho-spiritual states, can be uncomfortable or disconcerting for people who are not used to having so much energy moving in their systems. Breathwork releases pent up emotional, psychological and physical energies, which can be surprising, even frightening. Loving support and gentle guidance is very helpful in learning some of the advanced breathing practices.

Everyone is comfortable with a certain level of energy flow and exchange in the body—the minimum subsistence amount of energy (prana) that is required for survival and everyday living. This basic flow and exchange is passive and unconscious. However in order to raise our energy level, to increase our power, and to awaken to higher potentials, we must breathe actively and consciously; we must learn and practice more advanced and effective methods of prana generation, absorption, and exchange. We must learn to relax into intensity.

It is important to realize that every negative emotion inhibits and depletes our life force. Emotional energy depletion occurs thru self-contamination and also by taking on the negative emotional energy from other people. Our energy body can become contaminated by environmental and emotional factors; so we must clear these energies on a regular basis if we are to remain clam and centered, energized and loving.

When we generate negative thoughts and emotions, or take them on from others, when we carry unresolved memories or traumas, or when we hold on to negative beliefs, our life-energy becomes congested or depleted, or both. We take great leaps toward peace and power, health and well-being, when we learn to clear these energies—what Leonard Orr calls “Emotional Energy Pollution” (EEP)—in productive and efficient ways.

Theory is fine, and useful for establishing a context, but as we learn in breathwork, the exercises, meditations and techniques must be effective; they must work in the real world and in our everyday lives, if they are to have any real value. Breathing practice is logical, succinct, and result-oriented.

Stephen Co teaches that the practice of pranic healing involves two basic modes of adjusting or regulating the breath:

1. Rhythmic breathing
2. Breath retention.

We use these techniques in order to awaken and activate creative forces and healing energies. We apply precise physical movements and specific breathing exercises to push prana into various organs and energy channels in the body.

For those of you who are interested, here are a few basic prana yoga terms:

“Puraka” means inhalation
“Rechaka” means exhalation
“Kumbhaka” means retention (holding)
“Babya Kumbhaka” means empty retention
“Antara Kumbahka” means full retention

Here are two basic breathing patterns taught by Master Co:

7-1-7-1 (“mother’s breath”) is the most basic, natural, and easy rhythm used in pranic healing.
(Inhale for the count of 7, hold for the count of 1, exhale for the count of 7, hold for the count of 1)

6-3-6-3 (“dynamic breath”) is a more powerful and advanced breathing pattern.
(Inhale for the count of 6, hold for the count of 3, exhale for the count of 6, hold for the count of 3)

NOTE: When counting, you can use your watch (counting seconds), or you can count your heartbeats.

When practicing pranic healing exercises, we also establish a clear intention; we apply our creative consciousness to the process. Master Co reminds us that we are talking about “light awareness,” “gentle attention:” not strained concentration or strong will. We can also use visualization techniques.

When doing pranic healing work, we often combine circular hand movements over various parts of the body, in order to do energy clearing and healing. The basic rule is to use clockwise motions to energize and infuse, and to use counter-clockwise movements to clear and cleanse.

Master Co teaches a very specific set of breathing exercises/meditations called “The 9 Energizing Breaths.” The point is to draw energy or prana in, and to physicalize it: that is to infuse it into our cells and tissues, our organs and bones. To accomplish this, he makes use of:

1) Powerful breathing rhythms
2) Retention techniques
3) Dynamic movements
4) Squeezing pc muscle.

To learn more about him and his specific methods, look him up on the web or in person, or find his book. He is definitely on my list of teachers and healers that we will be inviting to Baja Bio Sana in the coming months and years.

As you may know, we have established a teaching and healing center in Los Cabos. We are developing an intentional community there, and creating an “eco-chic” resort retreat. It is a place where people can take a break from their everyday lives, and enjoy spiritual rejuvenation in nature. It’s place where people can dive deep into their personal practice, and take quantum leaps in their professional development. I myself desire this respite between my trips and travels.

It is already a place where we are doing healing and growth work, and where I offer basic and advanced breathwork programs, as well as a high level practitioner training. So, check out our schedule, and make plans to come on down to the Baja!

Over time, the practice of breath awareness naturally deepens and expands to include the awareness of many other things in us and around us. Some of these things seem so obvious…we have to wonder how we could have missed them for so long… why it took us so long to “get it!” For example, isn’t it obvious that our thoughts and feelings affect our health and well-being? Negative thoughts feel bad, and positive thoughts feel good!

When we think kind, loving and grateful thoughts, when we are open and caring, generous and humorous, we feel good, light and happy, don’t we? Those thoughts and feelings are sweet and pleasant. When we consciously choose loving, caring, compassionate, kind, accepting, soft, or humorous thoughts, we feel wonderful, don’t we?

When we choose serious, angry or resentful thoughts and feelings, when we choose to judge and complain, when we embrace self-righteousness, and generate negative emotions, we feel those thoughts and emotions in our bodies—as contractions and unpleasantness. We feel sour and heavy. Our thoughts and emotions cause changes in our physical bodies; they have an effect on our cells and organs, our psyche and nervous system… in other words on our health and well-being.

Every single thought produces a specific chemical that our system must process. Positive thoughts are like sweet healing nectar. Negative thoughts are our bitter toxic poison. Imagine what is happening to our immune system when we have negative thoughts! Once we wake up, we realize that we cannot afford the luxury of negative thoughts or attitudes.

Still our minds have habits. Old conditioned programs continue to operate in us, and other people’s energy affects us. And so we must remain vigilant and aware. We must continuously upgrade our thoughts and perceptions. We must identify and change patterns and reactions that do not serve us. And as we do, more life force energy becomes available to us, to heal ourselves and each other, to grow and evolve!

Through the practice of spiritual breathing, we come to realize that every thought we think, every word we speak, and every action we take has a real and tangible effect on us, on our health and well-being, on our aliveness! Furthermore, we realize that whatever we hold in consciousness affects not only us, but also everyone and everything in existence, because we are all connected.

Looking out at the world on the everyday level, it certainly seems that everything and everyone is separate. Yet when we open and relax, when we breathe and let go, when we drop into our center, when we expand our consciousness, then there is no doubt that all is one!

When we embrace this sense of “oneness,” when we allow it to determine our perceptions, when our heart guides our mind, reality and the truth of our being dawns in us in no uncertain terms. We experience what has been called “sat chit ananda” consciousness existence bliss. Maybe that’s what Jesus was pointing to when he said: “When your eye is single, then your whole body will be filled with light!”

I love coming home to a place I’ve never been before! Hey, I am told that Transylvania is two hours by train from here. So cool! I always thought that it was a made up place for the Dracula movies! I’ll be heading there after the seminars, just for the heck of it!

The seminars and sessions in France were so beautiful! Such a wonderful group of souls! Thank you to Catherine and Stephan, to Jean Marc a good friend, and famous for being Deepak Chopra’s French interpreter! And of course, thank you to everyone for brining so much readiness and willingness to the process. Everyone opened their hearts and minds so quickly—to themselves and each other, to life and the breath. Ah yes!

The week I just finished in Holland was spectacular! So much love and gratitude go out to Cora, and to all her wonderful friends. Thank you to Romano my tour guide and to Vin, and to the more than 50 beautiful people who came to breathing trainings in Eindhoven and Nieuwegein.

I still continue to receive letters and reports from people in Lithuania! It is so heart-warming to hear about their changes, their healing, and their insights. The love and peace that comes through the breath is amazing! Thank you again to Andrius and Loreta and Asta, and especially to Dalia who is spreading breathwork to every city in that country! You are such a star Dalia! I am so blessed by your presence in my life.

Because of the incredible interest in the breathing seminars there, I have decided to do another program there in the end of July and the beginning of August. This is another opportunity for some of you from around the world to visit this beautiful country and to breathe with some of the wonderful people there!

Are you living your Dream?

We all have amazing spiritual abilities. And we tend to project these higher powers onto others, or we only associate them with gods and gurus, or saints and masters. With breathwork, we can directly experience this spirit within ourselves. By consciously connecting to this spirit, we are able to play a creative role in our own spiritual evolution.

Today, and in the coming times, we are called to be in harmony, in resonance, with the spirit that permeates our being. We are being asked to question any old (or new age) teachings that lure us into thinking that this healing and creative force resides in some external authority or somewhere outside of us. We are invited to gently question any doctrines that put teachers, traditions, churches, rituals, dogmas, or relics between us and our source. Let us recognize and honor the fact that our source and the spirit of life resides in each and every one of us.

We all have dreams. As children, we had some very big and sacred dreams. And it seems that for most of us, or for many of us, and perhaps for you, somewhere along the way, those dreams were lost, forgotten, or they died. We were taught to settle for less. We were forced to conform. Some of us were actually told to: “stop dreaming and face reality!” And like all good children, we did our best to do what we were told… we obeyed these instructions.

The truth is we were created to be much more than we were led to believe. We are unique miracles. We were meant to live an extraordinary life. We have an amazing purpose. We were born to shake and change the world! We have a sacred mission: to play a part in the healing of this planet. That’s why we’re here: to start with ourselves, to go beyond our own personal barriers, to discover, explore, and develop our own true inner power. Let’s start right now.

For me, I can say that I am actively and consciously engaged in the process of achieving my dreams. I can testify to the fact that health and well-being, peace of mind and great happiness are natural bi-products of living one’s dream. Are you living your dream? If not, what is holding you back? Is it something physical, emotional, psychological, energetic, social? Maybe it’s something unconscious. Are you willing to let go and be free? Are you willing to trust in your own divine nature, and to relax into your source? Are you willing to surrender to love, and to be your real true self?

Take a nice big breath right now. And as you let it out, relax completely… Give yourself a sense of melting or dissolving into a vast space of inner silence and stillness… Your source, your essence, your destiny, awaits you there at the end of the exhale. In this still point, this zero point, lives an ocean of infinite energy. This universal energy can be used to clear away stress, tension, fatigue, doubt, dis-ease, and any limiting programs that you received as a child. This space is home to a vast storehouse of love and peace and joy.

As you sit in silence with eyes closed, use the breath to create a sense of stillness in your body. Direct your awareness inward as deeply as possible. Feel a sense of spaciousness, an open empty heart. This space, this emptiness, is the door to the infinite; it is the connection between you and existence. It is not mental or physical, psychological or material. It is beyond all this. It transcends these levels. It is your spirit. Even a momentary glimpse of this space, a taste of this spirit, is a blessing.

With practice, we can come to live in this space all the time. And when we live from this place our experience of life transforms into something radically different from that of most people. When we are in this state, our breathing changes in a fundamental way. Our brain processes information differently. Our chemistry and our physiology changes. Connecting to this space opens us to an amazing untapped resource. Higher expanded states of consciousness become “normal.” We discover that our body-mind system was designed to be a channel and a container for this energy, this spirit. Our system was perfectly designed to live in this field of oneness, or what some call “cosmic consciousness.”

In fact, we are all yogis, mystics, saints, shamans, and buddhas at heart! And as such, we can all learn to breathe in a way that dissolves stress and tension and dis-ease. We can learn to breathe in a way that opens us to subtle energies, and that activates a profound shift in our awareness. The world is on the verge of a great new era, a huge quantum leap. We are all being called to take part in our own evolution. Are you ready? Are you willing?

Breathwork, as we practice and teach it, helps us to connect more strongly and clearly to our source, to our center, and to our purpose. Spiritual breathing seminars and trainings help us discover and change some of our core beliefs—the ones that limit our experience and produce negative results in life. We focus on practical skills and powerful tools that nourish mind, body, and spirit. As we learn to connect more deeply with ourselves and each other, we discover the profound spiritual powers inherent in us, and we awaken to a peace that passes understanding.

I am in the most fortunate position at this point in my life: I simply don’t have the luxury of doubt anymore. I have an unshakable certainty about who we are, where we came from, and why we are here. And I have an unarguable track record on the path of healing, personal growth, and spiritual transformation. Thanks to the help of my students, teachers, friends, and life partners, I am constantly discovering and developing new “life changing” breath and breathing exercises and techniques.

If you are ready for more freedom and authentic self-expression… if you are ready to establish a continuous connection to your spirit, to experience more personal power, self-love, and to enter into a sacred relationship, then I invite you to take part in the seminars and trainings scheduled around the world; and I invite you to visit us at the new training center in Mexico! We are committed to ordinary miracles, and to making a real difference in the world. Are you? Then I invite you to participate in the Breathwork Practitioner/Certified Coach Trainings.

We are love. We came from love. We are here to love. And we will return to love. Love connects us to each other and it connects us all to God. Love flows through us in every moment like blood. Once you have this experience (which definitely comes to everyone during a spiritual breathing session), there is no forgetting it, and there is no going back! Awakening to this spirit of love emboldens and empowers us to live our dream.

This is beyond philosophy. You can actually experience the reality of this love, this spirit. Simply develop the habit of taking a breath before you speak or act. Take a breath when you see something beautiful, take a breath when you see something that disturbs you. Take a breath when someone insults or offends you, take a breath when someone praises or thanks you. Take a breath when something or someone warms your heart or frightens you.

Take a deep breath right now, and focus on love—not romantic love—but conscious, active, all-inclusive, unconditional love… Take a breath and think of a time when someone was expressing love to you. It needn’t be a big thing… a simple touch, a kind word, a gesture, a gift, a smile… maybe a stranger opening a door or giving you directions… These are all expressions of love!

The question is: did you recognize them as expressions of love in those moments? Do it now. Look back over your life (as if going through a photo album) and bring those moments to mind. As you do, take a breath and feel the love that was being expressed in those ordinary moments. Feel how loved you are right now. Every breath is an opportunity to feel love and to be love!

There is no need to rush or to force. Every breath is an opportunity to slow down. Just stop from time to time and enjoy simple things, the trees, the birds, the sky, and the people you meet. As Osho/Rajneesh once said: “Every river has always reached the ocean. And you cannot be the exception. Existence does not allow any exceptions. You will also reach the ocean.”

At the seminars and trainings, we focus on the “Formula for Transformation,” the “Five Principles of Breath Therapy,” The Three Convergences in Breathwork,” “Zen and the Art of Breathing,” the “Rebirthing Technique,” Prana, kriya, and Kundalini Yoga,” “Shamanic Breathwork,” “Taoist Practices,” “Chinese Medical Breathing Exercises,” and much more… Any one of these methods, styles, or approaches to breathwork can carry you to the ocean. Come and experience breathwork for yourself!

Some quick notes on a very powerful breathing exercise:

Michail Ryabko is a legendary figure in the martial art and warrior world. I recently met with this amazing master in Moscow, and got a taste of his extraordinary abilities… abilities that demolish common notions about what is possible for us. And he says he owes these abilities to awareness, relaxation, and breathing! One of the breathing techniques he teaches to all of his people is what he calls “burst breathing.”

Burst breathing involves inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. It is done very quickly and in a continuous (connected) way. The idea is to draw pain or fatigue from the body in little bits, and throw each bit out of the system on the exhale. We use the in-breath to “grab” pain or fatigue in the muscles and to release it on the out-breath. The practice requires that we bring ourselves to the edge of our physiological limits… which Ryabko’s teaches is the only place we can discover the real healing and restorative powers of the breath.

I have been playing with his method, and thanks to his body worker (who gave me the most intense deep tissue massage of my life) I was able to confirm the power and potential of this practice. I will be sharing this technique with some of my advanced students and practitioners, and anyone who feels that they are ready for it. And I will write more about Ryabko’s complete breathing system later. In the meantime, you can experiment with this particular technique yourself.

Choose any form of physical exercise that you like: push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups, squats, etc… And do them until you just can’t do any more. Bring yourself to your physiological limit, to the “end of your rope.” At that point hold your breath as long as possible, then relax completely and launch into this “restorative” burst breathing. You will suddenly find that you have reserve energy. You can go much further than you thought… and with an ease that may surprise you… and will certainly convince you.

Not all of us are engaged in life and death confrontations for a living, as Ryabko was and many of the people he trains are: but if his breathing techniques have proven to work in these most extreme situations, then surely we can derive remarkable benefits from them in confronting the everyday stresses of life! And what’s more, much of what helps us to survive can also help us to thrive!

Here’s to surviving and thriving!

Love and blessings to all!

Dan

What people are saying about the seminars:

“Dan shortened my learning curve by a mile, and he accelerated the benefits I was getting from my practice.” (R.G. counselor, personal coach, Providence, RI )

“I learned more about breathing (and about myself) in 4 days than I have from any other seminar or personal growth program I have ever attended (and I’ve attended many).” (L.M. marketing executive, Los Angeles, CA)

“Breathwork presented in the way that Dan does clearly transforms individuals. It awakens inner resources and ignites latent abilities.” (M.G. acupuncturist, Boston, MA)

I don’t know where this came from, but I love it: “As the sea is all of the wave, and the wave is part of the sea; so I am part of God, and God is all of me.”

How are you doing? How is your life going? What’s holding you back from being all that you can be? What’s stopping you from moving your life forward toward ultimate potential? What interferes with your body’s natural healing and rejuvenating abilities?

Consider that it may be this: any thought that separates you from the energy and intelligence that created and maintains you and everything else in existence. In other words, any negative or limiting thoughts or feelings that you hold, carry, project (no matter how “right” or “justifiable.”).

Your immune cells are constantly eavesdropping on your internal dialogue. Nothing that you say to yourself—and you are talking to yourself almost all the time, even in sleep—escapes the attention of your immune system. If you say, "I feel exhilarated, powerful, free and joyful!" and we were to sample your blood, we would find high levels of interleukin and interferon, two very powerful anti-cancer drugs. Our inner world is responsible for our outer experience.

Don’t worry about connecting the dots as you go forward. It will only make sense when you are looking back on it all. Let curiosity and intuition be your guide. Don’t let the lack of intellectual understanding stop you from following your heart! It has become very obvious to me that now and in the coming times, the heart is the new root chakra. It is the true ground of our being. So breathe into your heart!

The mind was designed to serve the heart, and the heart knows no separation. But somehow we have allowed our mind to overpower our heart. Breathe into your heart!

Whenever you judge yourself or life to be anything other than perfect and beautiful, breathe into your heart. Whenever it appears that you or life is anything less than perfect and beautiful, breathe love and light into your heart!

I remember listening to Reverend Ike, the charismatic and flamboyant Christian preacher from the early 70’s. In response to people who said that they felt sad or fearful or angry or depressed. He would say: “I am doctor feel good. I tell my feelings how to feel!” And that’s exactly what we need to do: tell our feelings how to feel and our mind what to think.

Jim Leonard and Phil Laut pointed out in their book “Vivation, the Skill of Happiness” that we need not just accept whatever our conditioned mind conjures up or perceives as reality: we can actually choose our thoughts and create our personal reality!

Thoughts are creative. Thoughts become things. And the breath is what gives our mind its creative power. That’s why I love Breathwork. It supports us in changing our thoughts, in healing and in moving beyond healing. It supports us in living our deepest truth.

Time for an unabashed commercial! The online course I offer. 21 lessons in using the breath as a tool for health, growth, and change. It gives you many different ways to take control of your life force energy. It provides many tried and true methods of awakening your creative and healing abilities. I suggest you take advantage of the special holiday offer this month only. Pay $250 instead of $450. Simply write to me and request the special discount code.

Riding the Wave of Breath…

Do you ever feel that you are extending yourself beyond what is natural for you? Do you tend to push yourself in a way that you know is not comfortable or healthy for you? Or, do you ever feel that you are stopping short of what you truly desire, or are capable of? Do you tend to stop short of fulfilling natural comforts or enjoying unarguable health benefits?

When we live in the world, moving according to other people’s rhythms, or adhering to rigid social patterns and artificial schedules, it’s easy to slip away from our own natural way of being. And there are always lots of “good” reasons for putting aside our own healthy self-interest, especially when we have families, jobs, duties, and responsibilities.

We need to create or find the right balance. And when it comes to what we truly desire and deserve, there is a perfect balance point between stopping short or going beyond, beyond blowing past or missing out…

For any number of reasons, or for no reason, if you feel out of synch, or just not on your game for some reason… try the following breathing exercise.

You can also practice this exercise when you are listening to your favorite piece of music. Try it when you are watching television, while sitting in nature, or when you are enjoying the memory of a wonderful moment, when you are visualizing a beautiful intention or when imagining a perfect outcome…

You can also quietly turn to it when you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation. You can integrate this practice into any healing art and most meditations. You can incorporate it into your yoga practice… You can use it while receiving massage or body work… Do it when you are hiking, sun bathing, or just waiting in line at the grocery store.

Relax and focus on your breath… Let it come and go by itself. Become softly aware of your breathing. If you pay close attention to it, you will find that there is a certain point where the in-breath naturally wants to turn around and become an out-breath.

It’s possible to turn the breath around before it reaches this natural point. (In fact, many people do this chronically, unconsciously) It’s also possible to force the breath beyond this natural turning point. (Although I have found that this pattern is far less common.)

In Breathwork, we sometimes deliberately pull the breath past this point in order to open, expand, create more space, to invite more energy. We also do it in order to breathe through any sense of limitation. And we also use it to dissolve physical or emotional contractions, and to regain a certain energetic balance.

Riding that wave of breath… enjoying the curve of the breath… letting the breath turn at exactly that natural point, and letting your body subtly move with each wave… This is such a wonderful practice, and it gives us such a feeling of coming home to ourselves…

It’s a good idea to let the body yawn and sigh and stretch from time to time while exploring this exercise, then return to the simple pleasure of “riding the wave of breath.”

Do it right now. Lean back comfortably in your chair, and turn you attention to the flow of breath… Feel the breath coming in and going out. Watch for that point, feel for it… Be alert to that perfect place where the in-breath wants to turn into an out-breath.

Notice that this point can change with each breath. And it can also settle into a groove, a rhythm. Get a sense of that rhythm, that turning point, and let yourself ride it. Play with that curve, support and cooperate with that turning point. As you are inhaling, see if you can sense that point as you approach it. Ride the turn and let go into the out-breath.

Experiment with it. Deliberately turn the inhale into an exhale before you reach that natural point. Then deliberately pull the breath beyond that point before letting it turn into an exhale. This may help you to better recognize that perfect natural turning point. Relax into the natural rhythm and enjoy each natural wave.

It’s like riding a horse: you want to be at one with it. Doing this with the breath helps us to do this with whatever else is natural in us or for us. It is a way of honoring the life that flows through us, a way of tuning to our nature, a way of resting in our spirit.

We think more clearly after a few minutes of this exercise/meditation. It makes us more open to ourselves and to the flow of our own life force energy. It expands our internal consciousness, and at the same time makes us more aware of our surroundings. It helps us to connect more deeply to ourselves and others.

If you are interested in Breath Mastery, then you’ll want to practice this simple exercise. Give yourself the pure and direct experience of it. Fall into a smooth easy breathing rhythm, and consciously ride those soothing, strengthening waves of breath!

Good luck in your practice

Love and blessings to all!

Dan

Hello

Welcome to the December 2011 Breath and Breathing Report. You didn’t miss the October or November Newsletters: they’re in this one! (Check out my facebook page for photos!)

I am writing to you from the ashram in Herekhan, India. It’s a little after 4 am. I just took a bath in the River Ganges, and I’m about to hike to the top of Mount Kailash, the home of Shiva. I came here to India with a little group of pilgrims (Linda, Shari, Serena, Georgina, Grace, Mary, Martha, Lera) to sit in the cave where I first met Babaji the legendary immortal yogi in 1980, and where it is said he materialized his body in 1970.

A week ago, we were in Vrindavan and Mathura, the home and birthplace of Krishna. And before that we visited Varanasi, where the Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. From there, we traveled to Agra, where we watched the lunar eclipse on the full moon from the Taj Mahal. Then we visited the Sariska Forest Tiger Reserve, and Jaipur.

Next, we will travel north to Rishikesh, then to Dharmshala, the home of the Dalai Lama. And then to the Shabad Surat Sangam Ashram, a spiritual community where people practice living off the energy of the sun. Toward the end of the month, we will head south to Pondicherry, and Kerala, and then back to Goa for a Spiritual Breathing Training from January 2-11. I’ll fly back to the USA on January 18, and plan to be in the Baja by February 1.

A quick note on life and breath…

The American poet Walt Whitman wrote: “Every atom belonging to you, as well belongs to me.”

I just read the transcript of a talk given by Dr. Deepak Chopra in Seattle in 1991, where he pointed out that: “With one breath you take in 10 to the power of 22 atoms: an astronomical amount of raw material that ends up as your heart, brain and kidney cells, your neurons, and DNA. With each breath you breathe out 10 to the power of 22 atoms… bits of your bones, brain, heart… Technically speaking, we are intimately sharing our organs with each other all the time.”

Dr. Chopra also reminded us that based on radioactive isotope studies and mathematical calculations it can be shown that in this moment “your body contains a million atoms that were once in the body of Jesus, in the body of the Buddha or Leonardo Da Vinci or Michelangelo or Saddam Hussein.” In other words, it is impossible to physically separate yourself from anything or anybody who has ever existed.”

On this trip it has been very easy to feel the truth of that—to realize it. And it’s not just a mind thing. The experience of it comes when we develop the ability to be conscious of the space between our thoughts. I invite people to use their breath to awaken to this space and to this experience of oneness and wholeness.

Another inspirational breathing teacher…

Pema Chodron is a beautiful contemporary voice in the Buddhist tradition. But you don’t have to be a Buddhist to appreciate or benefit from her advice on how to break free of negative psychological states or destructive emotional patterns. She has helped many people to find more freedom and happiness in life.

I love her idea that the work is “to find a new way to face our everyday situations.” I love her view that the work is “to uncover or express the three basic human qualities: natural intelligence, natural warmth, and natural openness.”

I love how she turns to the breath, as I do, in order to gain clarity, insight and balance when she gets hooked or stuck in doubt, fear, anger, blame, self-hatred, addictions, etc.

If you have not read any of her books, then I strongly suggest you read: “Taking the Leap: Freeing Ourselves from Old Habits and Fears” (Shambhala Publications). Or better yet, go out of your way to find her and to sit in her presence…You will be delighted by the energy she exudes. And you may be amazed at how much you can absorb from this simple ordinary living master, if you open your heart and breathe.

Back to the travel log…

October flew by in South Africa. Thank you to Shakti and Rhianne and to everyone in Cape Town who went on the tantric journey with us, who opened to themselves and their sexual energy, and who learned to use this God-given energy to heal and grow and to awaken to more love and aliveness.

Special thanks to Dr. Ela Magna and to everyone at the Woodlands Spa in Johannesburg. Because of Ela, interest in Breathwork is spreading like wild fire. In fact, a Breathing Academy has been established there. You are welcome to participate in the advanced certification training that takes place there in May. If you are a practitioner trainer, you are invited to serve on the faculty. The healing spa they have created there is as good as it gets: a perfect place to practice breathwork! Visit: www. healingatwoodlands.co.za.

I spent most of November on the farm in Mexico, melting into the gardens, celebrating Thanksgiving and the elements of fire, air, water, and earth. We have such pure water there, such clean air, mineral rich soils, and we have summer weather all winter! The ocean is alive, and the mountain streams are so refreshing. The hot springs are only five minutes away. Our neighbors in the village of El Chorro and in the towns of Agua Caliente, Miraflores and Santiago are sweet, helpful, generous and kind. We have so much to be grateful for!

Everyone did such an amazing job in the gardens and nursery. Thank you to Andrew, Bob, Vidunas, Angela, Guzel, Marina, Kit, Andromeda, Diego… to Manuel, Gabriel, and of course Trino, and to everyone who helped make this the best planting season ever!

Here is a list of some of what we have growing in the Prana Gardens: Rosemary, garlic, oregano, cilantro, calypso beans, sweet potatoes, red onions, butternut squash, lemon cucumbers, strawberries, papaya, red and green lettuce, sunflowers, zinnia, hibiscus, jasmine, African and Mexican marigolds, nasturtium, arugula, lemongrass, pineapple, passion fruit, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, chamomile, Russian black radish, damen radish, large leaf spinach, New Zealand spinach, green basil, purple basil, sweet peas, snow peas, beets, Swiss chard, purple kale, green kale, broccoli, eggplant, borage, jalapeno peppers, black pearl peppers, green chili peppers, bok choy, green choy, carrots, zucchini, peppermint, sage, dill, thyme, fennel, parsley, jack fruit, date and coconut palms, pomegranate, papaya, bananas, mulberries, a dozen varieties of tomatoes, and so much more!

The new nursery palapa is built. It’s a 6-sided structure, about 25 feet in diameter, made with local harvested palm trees. Trino did such a magnificent job of handcrafting it over the summer. We packed down the earthen floor just in time for our 11/11 Ceremony.

About a dozen of us gathered in the palapa on the occasion… connecting, co-visioning, humming, singing, and voicing our personal and community intentions.

My favorite moment on the farm was splitting the huge rock that had been holding up progress in digging the well. Heime one of our neighbors brought some special materials that when mixed and packed into the holes that Andrew drilled, expanded and split the rock in two. Thanks to Vidunas and Bob, hauling it up with the jeep was a fun adventure. We now have another big stone near the fire pit to sit on.

Community development continues at Baja Bio Sana, and is accelerating. We now have 13 committed founders. And this month we purchased the Kina Retreat, 8 acres of land adjoining our property and bordering on the bio-reserve. This gives us about 28 acres all together, allowing space for an additional 6 to 8 community members.

You are welcome to visit our little piece of paradise. If you would like to support the development of a sustainable community in harmony with nature, and to be an example of someone who is living the dream, then now is a good time to act! Information about the project can be found at www.bajabiosana.org.

By the way, before leaving the USA, I spent two days in Las Vegas with Angel Annie, San Diego’s premier breathworker. We stayed at the MGM Grand Hotel, took in the crazy sights and sounds, and especially enjoyed “Love,” the Cirque du Soleil Beatle Music Show. (A great way to prepare for India, don’t you think?)

The 2012 travel schedule is shaping up.

Feb 1-29: Baja Bio Sana, Los Cabos, Mexico

March 7-18: Moscow. (A great chance for you to finally visit Russia!)

May 3-23: South Africa

July 1-14: Greece

The theme for the spring tour is walking your talk and living your dream. The focus is on releasing inherited limitations, dropping negative programs, releasing psychological and emotional blocks, and clearing old traumas and past karma… The focus is on expanding consciousness beyond the conditioned mind, on aligning ourselves with the “Divine Mind,” and embodying our “Highest Self.”

Suffering and destructive emotions are unnecessary. Identify the root cause of these things in yourself, and replace them with heart-centered insight and love. Deal with your skewed perceptions and counter-productive emotions because they harm you and others, and they block your awakening.

Complete love is the best response to suffering. It is based on altruism, not attachment. Undiscriminating, spontaneous, unlimited love is possible even toward an enemy. Love and compassion open us to our inner life, and they are present in us from birth. They are inherent values. Racial, ethnic, political, and theological perspectives are learned.

Misapprehension of things, and what we falsely overlay or superimpose onto phenomena must be corrected. Clearing up the disparity between how you and things appear to the mind and how they actually exist… this is the task. Give up the false beliefs you are superimposing on the way things really are. Use reason to explore the true nature of things, then concentrate on what has been understood.

The more closely we examine things, the more likely we are to find empty space. The solidity and permanence that we superimpose onto things is not a true status. Phenomena are empty of their own inherent existence. The mind mistakenly assumes that people and things exist in and of themselves, by way of their own nature. This false quality of “inherent existence” is ignorance, and it is the cause of suffering.

Anything that is dependent for its existence on a thought (conceptuality), or through some other force or factor or condition, or any other elements, has no inherent existence. All phenomena, cause and effect, this and that, are established and rely on other factors, and therefore have no inherent existence. These things exist, but not independently.

Anything that changes has no inherent existence, anything that can turn from good to bad, advance or decline, must be devoid of a true self-instituting nature. The fact that people and phenomena change, proves that they do not have individual or independent status, they are not able to set themselves up. It is not that phenomena are illusions, they are like illusions. A reflection in a mirror is not really you, however the reflection itself is real.

The “I” exists, but it exists in this way (dependent, with no inherent existence). The “I” is dependent on the mind-body complex. There is no “self” other than the mind-body complex, because apart from the mind-body complex, it’s conception does not exist. A person is set up in dependence on mind and body.

Transform your outlook through two types of meditation: analysis and focus. A scattered mind is quite powerless. An unstable mind is not dependable. Clear, stable concentration leads to insight. A steady but weak mind, or a strong but unstable mind may be worse than being in the dark! You can’t see in the dark. A bright light is needed. But a flickering light is only partly useful.

We need both clarity and steadiness of mind, both insight and focused concentration. With intense clarity and firm stability, concentration requires no effort. Make use of the power of the mind and the power of gradual training to achieve “calm abiding,” where the mind is quiet, and of its own accord remains continuously clear, stable, and joyful.

Develop intense clarity and unwavering stability. Develop a meditative mind that is itself intensely clear, and where consciousness is bright and alert. Develop the ability to be single-mindedly, one pointedly, steadily focused on peace. If long periods of meditation are difficult, practice short frequent sessions.

The “I” and all phenomena continue to appear real even after enlightenment. But we recognize them for what they are, and what they are not. We recognize that the things that appear to exist inherently actually do not. They have been previously examined and shown to have no inherent existence.

A Meditation Suggested by the Dalai Lama

Bring someone to mind, and cultivate the three levels of love

1. This person wants happiness but is bereft. How nice it would be if he or she could be imbued with happiness and the all causes of happiness.

2. This person wants happiness but is bereft. May he or she be imbued with happiness and all the causes of happiness.

3. This person wants happiness. I will do whatever I can do to help him or her be imbued with happiness and all the causes of happiness.

The Buddha has been dropping in on me lately. (It’s nice to know that he still makes house calls!) Actually, it may be better to say that he has been rising up in me, or that I have been dropping down into him… because what we are talking about is our essential nature. We all have a Buddha Nature. And this nature is the closest thing to us… closer to us then our breath!

The mind has a bit of a problem in trying to grasp our nature. The straining of the mind to conceive or contain our nature actually makes it harder for us to directly experience it. That’s where meditation comes in. We’ve all had the experience of trying to remember something: where you left your keys or someone’s name, for example. And no matter how hard we try, we just can’t do it. So we stop trying, we relax, and suddenly it just pops into our mind. Realizing our nature is just like that. From a still quiet meditative place, “who we are” simply dawns on us.

The essence of Buddhist meditation is to tame the mind, to clam the mind, to quiet the incessant rational (and irrational) mental chatter. In order to have a direct experience of our nature, we need to rein in the metaphor generating/concept creating operation of the mind. Meditation transcends the intellect. It establishes that still quiet place from which we can directly experience the nature of the mind and the nature of all things. Buddhist practice means maintaining this awareness in meditation as well as in everyday life.

So, what would the Buddha say is the nature of the mind? He’d say “emptiness.” In fact, he would say that emptiness is the nature of all phenomena. And science has come to agree with the Buddha on this point. Quantum physics proves that the closer we look at things, the more we find that they are made more of “space” than “stuff!” Yet the Buddha would go a step further: he would point out that this space, this emptiness is alive. It has intelligence, inherent lucidity. Emptiness or space possesses a living clarity beyond description. And that is a leap, even for many quantum physicists!

This “all pervasive wisdom” is not distant or inaccessible, it is inherently present in everyone. We have been taught to think of it as far away and difficult to obtain. We even set it apart, and call it “God.” And yet, it is our very own nature. The realization of this brings tremendous peace and bliss. But we don’t need to believe in the Buddha, or to trust quantum physics: we can be our own scientist. Through the constant practice of meditative awareness, the positive and negative aspects of the ego control our perception less and less. Our emotional roller coasters come to a stop, and people and things no longer disturb us.

When we experience what is clear and unmoving beyond duality–our nature–we are liberated in every way. Our mind is perfectly capable of being utterly at peace, totally free of disturbing thoughts and emotions, and also capable of being perfectly still, insightful and discerning. To do this we have to eliminate the disturbing thoughts and emotions that cloud our perception. We need to drop the false perceptions that we hold of our self and others.

Meditation is a perfect way to do this. To meditate means to observe our thoughts and emotions, and not the people, objects, or conditions that triggered the thoughts or led to the emotions. When we do that, we realize that they have no substance, no location. They are empty and powerless. What a relief! Normally we do not simply observe our mind, and so we have not discerned its nature or the nature of its thoughts. Instead we are caught up in them, pushed and pulled by them, and the emotions that they generate, further removing or distracting us from the direct recognition of our nature.

To keep from being caught up in disturbing emotions, we need to look at the nature of whatever arises in our mind. If we follow after our emotions and mental states, we become their servant, loosing our natural freedom and power. However, when we inquire into them and examine their nature, we realize they are like appearances in a mirror. The appearance is real. Thoughts, feelings and sensations and emotions are real, but their reality is dependent: they have no inherent existence. This realization results in the realization of natural peace and bliss.

Everything that arises in consciousness is a generalized abstraction resembling some previous perception. We then attach language or a label to it (another abstraction). This happens so quickly, so automatically, that we mistake this mental phenomenon–the abstraction–for the thing itself. We confuse the mind’s creation with the reality itself. We believe that disturbing emotions are terrible, that thoughts are bad, that sadness is a shame; but the nature and source of all things is actually love, flawless bliss! The Buddha would say that not recognizing our own nature and the nature of everything (which is the same) is the fundamental cause of all our suffering and all our problems.

The Buddha would say that we suffer from a double ignorance: we do not see what is real, and we see what is not real. We confuse facts with non-facts, and non-facts with facts. We see what is not there, and we don’t see what is there. We see things as existing that actually don’t exist, and we see things that actually exist as not existing. This basic confusion together with “dualistic thinking” (right-wrong, good-bad, us-them) is the root cause of our suffering. It’s like pressing on your eyeballs and seeing double. Stop pressing and the illusion disappears.

All things that arise in the mind: thoughts, disturbing emotions, sadness, misery, etc., are merely appearances. All of the various and seemingly opposite states of happiness and sadness have the same fundamental nature. There is no defect in the nature of your mind that needs to be removed. There are no qualities outside of it that need to be introduced into it. The Buddha showed us that when we completely realize this perfect nature, then we are completely and perfectly liberated.

When we are looking at digital images in a movie, we are looking at countless tiny points of light. This amazing technology allows us to experience the appearance of real people, places, and events. This “confusion” between what actually is and what we perceive is required if we are to be emotionally affected by the movie. We have to forget we are watching a movie. Similarly, the stunning vividness and intensity of the mind’s images can overpower our ability to see through to its actual nature.

We need not attempt to control or alter the mind’s nature. We need not create or maintain any particular mental state. The mind’s nature is not contrived and so it cannot be altered or changed. Whatever we experience that needs changing is only what we ourselves have created. What we are attempting to realize are not temporary or conditional experiences: what we aim to realize is what transcends them.

Our nature is not affected when we are afflicted by ignorance, disturbing thoughts and emotions. But when these obscurations are present, the qualities of our nature are not evident to us. We accumulate limiting and negative habits and tendencies when we do not maintain a conscious awareness or remembering of the mind’s (and our) nature.

Understanding emptiness and having intellectual certainty of our nature is important and perhaps a necessary step. But it is not enough. In fact, attachment to this understanding or certainty can become an obstacle. Direct authentic experience through meditation is what is required. Conceptual certainty derived from logical analysis, inference, contemplation, or reflection is no substitute for direct realization arising from meditation.

Pure meditation is free of all intellectualization and conceptualization. Meditation is the direct experience of the mind exactly as it is. Meditation is not an attempt to create it, alter it, change it, or control it. Attachment can arise in meditation when we have an amazing experience, and begin to desire its repetition and continuation. We can generate experiences of bliss, extraordinary clarity, and states of non-thinking along the path, but they are not the goal. We can enjoy them, celebrate them, but becoming attached to them will only hinder us.

It is said that the two wings of the bird flying to enlightenment are compassion and wisdom. So let’s make meditation a cornerstone of daily living. Let’s practice and develop the qualities of the Buddha mind: wisdom, compassion, and the ability to help others.

Love and Blessing to all!
